FAQ

car cost calculator - reduce your car running costs

If you are a good driver and not made a claim on your car insurance then you will most likely have a rating that entitles you to a discount on your insurance.  This rating is often called No Claims Bonus (NCB) or No Claims Discount (NCD).  The NCD will vary depending on age, insurer and accidents you have had.  The maximum NCB is usually 65% which turns out to be a large saving on your car insurance policy.

But what if you decide to change insurance companies?  It is important to requote every year as insurance companies are continually changing how they price car insurance premiums so by looking around you can save literally $100s off the cost and could end up getting cheap car insurance.  If you change insurers however you don't want to lose the good rating you have build up.

Most insurance companies will let you keep your NCB with sufficient evidence.  This means that you will have to proove to them that you held a NCB with your previous insurance company.  For instance, if you decided you wanted to go from AAMI to Budget because you got a better priced quote then you will need to proove to Budget Direct that you held a rating or NCB with AAMI.   Before you switch insurance companies give them a call to ensure you can take across your car insurance NCB and ask what you will need to provide to do so.

After all, car insurance companies want to insure safe drivers so most of the time they will allow you to transfer over your NCB without making it too difficult for you.  So next time you need to renew your car insurance policy, get a few quotes and don't worry about losing your good rating because the chances are you can take it across with you.
